Writing Sessions with Sephera666

My TwitchTV/sephera666 Schedule for this Week

      Tuesday, March 8, 2022      4 p.m. EST    Writing Sprint

      Thursday, March 10, 2022   4 p.m. EST    Writing Sprint

      Friday, March 11, 2022        2 p.m. EST     Gaming

Sunday, March 13, 2022       3 p.m. EST     Horror Writers Association Round Table

Writing Sprints and Gaming should be pretty much the same every week.

Check my schedule on Twitch in case I have to move times around now and again.

The Round Table is a special event with the Horror Writers Association!

    Writing Sprints

Currently, the format I have for Writing Sprint sessions goes like this:

Saying hello, talking a little bit about almost anything and answering the chat until we're ready to go, maybe five to ten minutes, depending on questions.

The timer is set for thirty minutes. I turn off my mic and everyone writes for thirty minutes.

There is a five to ten-minute break to go to the bathroom, get drinks and snacks, or go through stretching exercises with me. We can also talk about what we're working on, word counts for the session, goals, or if you have any questions about publishing/writing, we can discuss that as well.

The timer is set again for another thirty minutes.

The number of cycles depends on how long I can stay on and interest from the chat. My goal is an end time of seven p.m. EST but I often have to leave a bit early for work meetings that begin at seven.

I've been doing writing sprints for a few weeks now and am finding that I'm more productive than I thought I'd be. If you've never sprinted, give it a try.

Going forward, I'm considering having some kind of writing challenges where there would be prizes and such, but first, we have to build a good community.

Writers can be of any age, any level, and you can be working in any genre. You are only accountable to yourself. You can share or not, it's up to you.

I don't keep my counter on nor do I have the thing where I can see who is coming by. That way I'm not distracted by numbers and people. However, if you talk in the chat, I'll see you! If you chat to me during a sprint, I'll usually wait until the sprint is over to reply on the mic so as not to disrupt other sprinters.

I play royalty-free music from Pretzel that I hope is good background music for writing in any genre.

     Gaming Day

This is the day when I relax and play a game. I'm a really new gamer so I'm still learning and you can help me out!

       Special Events

Every now and again, there will be and have been special events on my Twitch.TV channel.

Sunday, March 13, 2022   3 p.m.  Women in Horror Month Roundtable with Authors from The Horror Writers Association

This special event is a one-and-a-half-hour panel of a discussion about horror. There will be a moderator who asks questions and you'll have an opportunity to ask questions in the chat. I'm one of the authors on the round table, the others are still being finalized. The moderator is David Thirteen.

     Monday, May 2, 2022        7 p.m.  Sèphera reads horror.

I'll be reading for about half an hour from one of my published horror novels. This event is sponsored by the National Reading Program through The Writers Union of Canada funded by the Canada Council for the Arts.

     Tuesday, June 21, 2022       7 p.m.  Sèphera reads horror.

I'll be reading for about half an hour from one of my published horror novels. This event is sponsored by the National Reading Program through The Writers Union of Canada funded by the Canada Council for the Arts.

Trying New Things!

One of the many new things I've been trying lately is getting on board the app train!

I have two books up on SCREAM: THRILLS AND CHILLS right this very minute.

SCREAM is a new production from Crazy Maple Studios.

Download the SCREAM: THRILLS AND CHILLS app from Google Play or Apple.

To celebrate this Beta launch, I'll be doing a contest for YOU to win coins so watch my social media for details over the next few days!

In other news:

Over the past year, I've been writing a couple of TV pilots and feature films in hope that perhaps one day they'll be made. You can find them over at Coverfly and Stage32.

I've also sent some pitches around to other apps in hope that I can write an interactive book or game.

So anything can happen!

In the meantime, mark your calendars, as I'll be doing another live reading on Twitch Tv.

Monday June 21 at 7 p.m. on http://www.twitch.tv/sephera666

It's Alive! Flesh Failure Lives!

Flesh Failure is another study in my exploration of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus.

Flesh Failure is set in 1888 London, the year of the Ripper, along with many other interesting historical pinnings that shape events in this story.

Our heroine claws her way through a maze of lies, attempting to discover who she really is.

She doesn't have much time, as someone such as herself isn't built for this world.

Flesh Failure was originally published by Samhain Horror Publishing as an eBook and was packaged with Captured Souls as a duo in a print version called Experiments in Terror.

Both Flesh Failure and Captured Souls are currently published by Scarlett Publishing. And both riff on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

Flesh Failure is available right now in eBook on Amazon. It will be out in print soon. It will likely be available with other distributors in a week or two.

Here's a snippet from a brand new review of Captured Souls over at Fresh Fiction!

"Delving into the mind of the psychotic, yet brilliant, Dr. Miriam will make you question your own humanity and boundaries. She is a truly complex character who is mostly detached, seeing humans as specimens and experiments, while showing small bursts of emotion when things do not go her way or she realizes her mistakes."

Doctor Sleep: Part One by Sèphera Girón and John Palisano

Doctor Sleep Sleep Part One
By Sèphera Girón and John Palisano

John Palisano and I have known each other for several years as horror authors and as chapter heads for the Horror Writers Association. He helps run the Los Angeles branch of HWA while I run the Toronto Branch.

A few weeks ago, we were talking about the new Stephen King book, Doctor Sleep. We were having so much fun, John had the idea to share our conversation. We were both reading at the same time, which was interesting. As we’re similar in some ways: both writers, both big Stephen King readers, we are also different. We’re a decade apart in age, and he lives on the other side of another country. I’m in Southern Ontario and he's in Southern California. We’re not sure how many posts it’s going to take for us to get through this. Maybe one? Maybe two or three more? We’ll have to see. So let’s get down to business, shall we? And feel free to comment!

J.P.: Hey. I don’t know about you but when I heard there was a sequel to The Shining I was nervous. Big Steve’s a very different writer than he was all those decades ago. I love his modern work, but it’s just that. Modern.

SG: I remember when I heard there was going to be a sequel to The Shining. It was on a rare occasion when Stephen King came to Toronto and doubly rare that I heard about it in advance and was able to buy a ticket to the event. He told us that night he was writing Dr. Sleep. He even read to us. I was having such a geek-gasm that I don’t remember much of the night except that there was going to be a sequel to The Shining. My brain has been screaming with anticipation about the sequel ever since. Yes, it’s been years. I may have missed several of King’s books in recent years, only because I’m a full time writer and editor and never get to read for FUN, but I made the full out effort to read Dr. Sleep. I had to. It’s in my DNA.

J.P.:I wasn’t sure what to expect when I read the description of the book. Danny as an older guy? Weird. No Overlook? No hedge animals? (they do make a cameo) How was this going to play out? What’d you think?

S.G.: I had no idea what to expect. I wondered what would happen to our Danny. Was he scarred for life from his Overlook adventure? Would he turn out to be a good guy or a bad guy or just some dude in an insane asylum? Does he still talk to his hand? Does he have nightmares about dear old dad? Will there be hedge animals? Will he be like Carrie and use his superpowers to manipulate the world around him?

J.P.: Right? Then the day came and I had it pre-ordered from Kindle and saw it download. And then I started reading it. Slowly. And I really didn’t like it. But I kept reading. I know myself. The first time I saw Fargo I didn’t like it. So many things, I didn’t like them at first, but I slowly warmed to them.

S.G. When the buzz came around that the book was coming out any minute, I was excited yet sad. I knew I’d have to stand around the bookstore reading it since buying a hardcover isn’t in the budget. But the universe smiled on me, and a colleague/fan sent me a brand new hardcover edition the day it came out! How cool and generous was THAT?

I hate the cover on the version I have. I’ve seen some better covers. But who cares about the cover. This is KING! My dude! My man! And THE SEQUEL!!!!!

J.P.: Yes, but this wasn’t what I was expecting. It wasn’t a Gothic ghost story. It wasn’t a continuation of the ghosts of the Overlook. Danny had grown into a real jerk. He didn’t do anything that I liked. He turned into a very selfish person. I didn’t like reading how sick he was. He was a drunk. A womanizer. A drifter. He didn’t seem to have much of a moral compass. What the hell? Wendy was dead. Dick Holleran was dead. This was a very lonely and depressing book.

S.G. I badly wanted a gothic ghost story. When I read The Shining, I was a teenager, in the seventies. I bought the book and sat in my room (in the basement) and refused to leave until I knew how it ended. I was too afraid to close the book. I was too afraid to stop reading as if something bad would happen to me if I did. I was terrified of the hedge animals. I read that book in two days. So when I started Dr. Sleep, I cried with joy at the moldy old lady and a hedge animal reference. When I buckled my seat belt, I thought I was going on the Haunted House ride. But then there was a turn. This wasn’t going to be my gothic ghost story. This wasn’t a haunting of ghosts, live or memorex. This was a modern day battle with alcohol. I didn’t want to read about it, alcoholism, there are too many people in my life who have it, who have impacted my own life in negative ways because of THEIR disease. But I soldiered on. After all, it’s Stevie…and Danny…and SOMETHING was going to happen!

J.P.: I almost stopped reading. But then something happened.
It hit me that what I was reading was a very realistic portrayal of someone deeply addicted to alcohol. Alcoholism runs in families. It made sense. This was Jack Torrance’s son. This is the side of Jack only glimpsed off in “The Shining” all those years ago. We were seeing it front and center inside Danny. But only Dan didn’t have a family. Times were different. People married earlier in Jack’s era. It was less common to be a single man.
So then I thought: this is brilliant, he’s really showing us the poison personality that took Jack down. Now we’re seeing it taking Dan down.

S.G. Danny on the benders felt so real, and I guess because it’s Stephen King’s battle too. And though I had the disappointment that this wasn’t The Shining Part Two, I accepted the turn in the road and endured Danny’s difficult and heartbreaking journey of drunk despair. I did feel ripped off that we didn’t spend more time with Wendy but hey, horror comes in all forms and the horror was, Wendy wasn’t who we thought she was and she didn’t have a starring role in Dr. Sleep. I read The Shining as a young virgin teenager. I read Dr. Sleep as the mother of two adult sons and the star of two magnificently horrible divorces. So I wondered how Wendy had aged, what kind of mother would she be in Dr. Sleep, but…well, that turned out to be a non-issue. King is a master manipulator even if you think he’s “lazy” “forgetful” or “contrary” with his treatment of Dr. Sleep. He didn’t give us Wendy not because he’s any of those things but because he’s a cruel bastard and a masterful storyteller. He gave us something NEW.

J.P.: There was enough along the way to hint that something else was coming. Something supernatural. And then the True Knot appeared. The group of roving, white trash-esque demons. The eaters of the steam. Steam stolen from those with The Shining. Kids. Babies. The True Knot are nasty evil things. Very reminiscent to me of Insomnia and Hearts in Atlantis. I started seeing connections to a lot of other of King’s stories and novels. Not direct references, like when he sets all the stories in the same town of Castle rock, but in that there’s something else working together to do very bad things. From then on it was hard for me to put it down.

S.G.: Seriously? I thought, okay. Here’s where the connections are going to happen. Here’s where King is going to take us on a journey that we didn’t expect, after all, that’s what he does. Why WOULD he write The Shining Part Two?!? He’s Stephen-Fucking-King and he’s going to put loop-de-loups on the roller coaster that we won’t expect. And he did.

J.P.: I know! And then it was like seeing the gears working behind the scenes of all these horrible things that have happened in King stories over the decades. It seems that they were being tied together somehow. And then I fell in love with Dr. Sleep. It got under my skin in a way few new novels have been able to do.
What was that first third of the book like for you? Did you have the same kind of feelings or were you swept away right in the beginning?
The writing style is also remarkably different than The Shining. What did you think of all the nods to the original book? The woman in the room? The hedge animals. The Overlook burning down and still haunting Dannie?

S.G.: The writing style is different, definitely. I’ve not read The Shining in over twenty years. I re-read it in University and now and again, glance through bits of it. I love the nods in Dr. Sleep to The Shining. In that first third of the book, it was that jagged nerve-wracking click-click-click up the first hill of the roller coaster…I get impatient with set-ups but I know how King works and you don’t want to miss a word of set-up because he will give us the pay-off at some point…or so the theory goes…
So by the first third of the book, I had my own whirlwind of emotions. Excitement, disappointment, intrigue…and that’s enough for me to keep turning the pages…

STAY TUNED FOR PART TWO!

The Haunted Mansion Interviews Sèphera Girón and more!

In September 2010 and in September 2012, a group of horror authors, artists, and poets descending upon a retreat nestled into the mountains of Southern California.

The mansion has been used as a retreat for decades but its history, as is the case with all old buildings, spawns back a century through interesting times. The house was originally built by husband as a love letter to his wife. The heart-shaped lawn was proof of his devotion to her.
There were many deaths associated with the house, old age, illness and that sort of thing. Of course, there are rumours including drowning in the pool or a shooting in a stairwell.  But the rumours have nothing to substantiate them in my own understanding.
The home was and still is used as a religious retreat. There are satchels hanging from trees, medicine bags strung by hopeful new Agers and first nations. There is a calm vibration most of the time that lends itself creative flow. An easy give and take among the retreaters made for a tightly knit and magnetic group.
The home is also used, of course, as a writers retreat and other artists as well. The attic with its glorious sunroof is already set up as an artists studio and Yvonne Navarro spent the second retreat painting a magnificent work.
There are now two Haunted Mansion books out from Damnation Books. Each book covers the events and inspirations from the specific years.

Many of us experienced unexplained events while others didn't experience anything. Rain Graves and I were roommates both times. The first year, we stayed in a little room, thinking that a tiny room would be "safe."  Boy were we wrong.

The second year we were ready to stay in the same room. We even started to unpack but as the creepiness of the room began to settle into our bones, we had second thoughts. Since there were more people attending the retreat that year than the previous year, there were more floors and rooms available. We both decided that we would definitely NOT be staying on the third floor. No way. So we chose a room on the first floor, just off the safe room. We liked our spacious room although there was a whole suite attached to it that was very scary. There was a kitchen and another bedroom. The vibes in those room were not as welcoming and during the weekend, I had successful luck with the Ghost Girls in experiencing unusual activity.

The books tell our stories and both books are laid out in a similar manner. There is fiction, non-fiction, and photography.

These stories, poems, and art were inspired by the creative vibe and the talkative ghosts at the Haunted Mansion Retreat.

Editor Loren Rhoads, who attended the Haunted Mansion Retreat both times, is conducting a series of interviews with authors who contributed to the book.

New Orleans: The World Horror Convention and the Bram Stoker Awards

In a few days, I'll be in New Orleans. So hard to imagine. I was born there and have never been back since I was an infant.

It's been on my bucket list my whole life to go to New Orleans and I'm thrilled to have the chance.

I've not been able to attend a World Horror ever since it was in Toronto in 2006. It's been difficult to not attend as I was at all of them with the exception of one before that point. I even went to one in Nashville pregnant with Dorian.

At any rate, I'm excited to attend World Horror.

This is two conventions in one and it's actually the Horror Writers Association hosting the Bram Stoker Awards Weekend and they've embraced World Horror this year.

The Awards will be given out this weekend but I won't be at the banquet. I may go to the awards ceremony which is open to the public, it depends on what New Orleans looks like on a Saturday night.

THURSDAY

4 - 6 Registration Desk

FRIDAY

10 am Friday morning I'm going on the St. Louis Cemetery Tour for a couple of hours before the heat is too wretched.

3 - 4 Social Media Panel

5:30 - 6:30 I'm at the HWA table in the Dealer's Room

6:30 - 7 Haunted Mansion Writers panel  reading where I'll be reading a poem at 6 on Friday.

7 - 8 Mass Autographing. I have nothing to bring to sell to be autographed so make certain to get your copies of the Haunted Mansion Retreat #2 (and #1) from the Damnation Books Table. I'm also in DB's Writing Tales to Terrify. High Stakes might be for sale there too and I have a story in there.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

I'll be taking in panels, the city, hanging in the bar, going to parties!

I'm so excited to go to New Orleans, to World Horror and to the Stokers I could just burst!

But I won't because they won't ship my body parts in a duffle bag across the border.

If you see me around, don't be shy, say hello!

Weird Tales of Terror Kindle and Print

As you can see, I've changed the cover of the Kindle Edition of Weird Tales of Terror again.

It is now available in print form too and I've kept the price as low as I could possibly keep it for over 350 pages.

It has been just over a year since I published my first e-book. It's been an interesting ride so far. I'm learning so much every time I publish a new book.

I like to think that my formatting and cover designs are slowly improving. After all, I'm a writer, not an artist, not a graphic designer, not a marketing person nor a pr person. However, I find the idea of self-publishing e-books very exciting. I like the idea that I don't have to wait years for my work to be in the hands of my readers.

I'm keeping all the prices of my books very low although I know I could charge more as an award-winning novelist. However, the reason I first started to write was so that I could share my ideas and stories with everyone.

Currently, my only income is from my writing. I don't have a day job or a husband to help me pay the rent. I'm focusing soley on building my business.

If you like my work, please leave me a review. If you've received one of my e-books for free, I would doubly appreciate a review on either Smashwords or Kindle.

I have books available for free all the time on Smashwords.

Today I have a book for free on Kindle for the next few days.

This weekend's treat is: No One Listens and Release

Remember, no matter who your favourite writers might be, you will help them a lot by leaving a review on their book pages.

However, please don't leave silly reviews as the person who left the two star review on my Release/No One Listens book felt inclined to do. I'm not sure why she chose to leave a two star review when she seemed pleased to receive a free book and said that she hadn't read it yet and was looking forward to reading it. But now I have a two star review which looks like someone didn't like my book, when in fact, the person never even read it.

If you want to help your fellow authors, it doesn't cost you anything but  a few minutes to write a review for books you've enjoyed.

Many authors don't mention it but we all pay attention to reviews and are always thrilled to see how we've touched our readers, whether it's in a good way or a bad way.

Think of leaving a review for your favourite authors much like leaving them a precious gift. It will be forever appreciated and doesn't cost anything and takes very little time.

Authors everywhere thank you!

Telling Tales of Terror has hit the electronic stands with the print version due out any day now from Damnation Books.

As you can see, authors speak from the trenches about the various componants that shape a horror writers' career. From conception of an idea to landing that idea into other people's hands is a long, sometimes treacherous path that can be as scary as the book you're breathing into life.

What Scares You?

Everyone has basic fears.

Some are ingrained into our survival code.

Others stem from experiences we've had.

Some become phobias.

I'M NOT AFRAID
The person who declares he's not afraid of anything is likely one of the biggest cowards in the room.

There are fears of poverty, of homelessness, of our children going hungry.

There are fears of bugs or birds or cats or sharks.

There are fears of ghosts, spirits, monsters.

There are fears of what another human will do to us.

BE AFRAID
Fears seem to be categorized into different sections.

As a writer, I enjoy exploring fears from every level.

Sometimes I find writing about what scares me helps me understand why I'm scared.

When you're writing about scary things, you have to have a basis about WHY it's scary.

You also have to walk that fine line about what is scary to one and may not be to another.

In fact, some people find some fears utterly ridiculous yet another person would actually die of a heart attack if they were in the same situation.

SCARY PRANKS
Did you see that Youtube video that's making the rounds about the scary pranks on people trapped in the elevator?

I was watching that thinking that at first, I'd be scared then I'd realize that it has to be people fooling around since I know so many people who work in Halloween Scream Houses.

However, even though I'm a big fraidy cat, once my initial fear is gone, I start to analyze what is going on. If I was in that situation, it wouldn't take me more than the initial jolt to realize it's a trick. No way would I believe that it's really a ghost. I'd instantly know there's a trap door. All those years of theatre, ya know!

But I was thinking about some people might freak right out, perhaps even have a heart attack.

MIND FREAK
That video is an interesting experiment in discovering what truly scares us.

We are afraid, watching the video while thinking "what if it ISN'T a fake?"

What if that really happened to me but it wasn't a cheesy haunted house trap door creepy kid prank?

What if it really WAS A GHOST?

I would freak out, you betcha.

VIDEO KILLED THE ELEVATOR RIDE
But this particular video set-up would have the average person be initially startled and frightened and then laugh and realize it's a joke.

What do you think about this prank?

Is it scary?

Is it mean?

Is it dangerous?

Is it dumb?

Romancing the Monster!

Paranormal Romance is huge right now.

Call it what you will but creatures of the night have been seducing fair maidens and strong lads for thousands of years.

It certainly wasn't invented this century with Twilight's Bella and Edward, however, kudos for putting the finger on the modern day pulse of horny teens (and wanna be at heart teens) everywhere.

From the early songs of the sirens, the snake tempting Eve with the apple, vampires and succubus have lured lusty men and women to their fates throughout histiory and fiction and lore.

What is it about monsters that allow us to look past their horrors to find the good hidden inside?

Is there good?

In romance, there is usually an inkling of good that the caputred soul can see even if no one else can.

What about the tortured soul of the Phantom of the Opera? Didn't he deserve special treatment as a reward for all the wrongs he suffered through...ignoring the wrongs he himself did to others.

He just needs special understanding so that he doesn't murder again. Or does he. Does he just need special guidance and a loving touch?

In her or his heart of hearts, the seduced one believes that he or she is the special one who can transform the beast into something human.

Or perhaps that person yearns to be a beast as well.

Paranormal romance comes in varying degrees of magic and evil. There can be fantasy and horror. There is the battle of good and evil. There's pining and longing and in erotica, lots of fantastical fantasy humping and loving.

I, too, have dabbled in paranormal romance.

There are several books set in the fictional town of Hermana which is loosely modeled on Salem, Massasschusetts.

Twelve witches meet with their coven leader each month for one year to cast a love spell.

Each young lady is a different sign of the zodiac.

There is a book for each witch who also possesses a tool that allows her to earn a living in the tourist town.

Sagittarius is about a tarot reader.

Capricorn is about a vampire medium.

Aquarius is about a paranormal investigator.

Pisces is about an aura reader who is also an artist.

I also edited two anthologies which are lusty tales with a metaphysical slant.

Sexstrology has a sexy story about each sign of the zodiac.

Beach Boys is about the gay boys of summer with some occult weirdness.

You can find these books at Ravenous Romance, Amazon, Smashwords and nearly anywhere else.

I'd love to hear from you what you think about my own dabblings in paranormal romance. Or rather, paranormal erotica.

The Haunted Mansion Project in Pictures

The Haunted Mansion Project is a collection of non-fiction and fiction.

Who are the ghosts haunting it?

Can answers be found with tarot cards and state of the art ghost communication devices?

See interpretations of evp and other evidence in the journals.

Cringe in terror at the spooky tales of terror evolving from experiences over the weekend.
