What Is Serial Vlogger?

SerialVlogger is a horror novel written in tiny slices!

What does this mean?

It means that I’m serving up a slice of a novel every week.

Serial Vlogger is a complete novel, a horror novel.

Since it’s being written as I go along, it’s akin to a first draft!

I have more than half the book written, and I know how it ends. This isn’t really a pantser experiment in case you're worried! This is a full novel.

The idea for Serial Vlogger has been in my head for many years.

The character of Lenore (and a lot connected to her) has shown up in a couple of pitches, drafts, and ideas for other horror novels and screenplays but now she’s in Serial Vlogger.

The more time passes, the more urgency I feel about getting Serial Vlogger out as it’s a comment on YouTube culture and social media. Since these cultures change rather rapidly, I decided it’s time to just get the book out before things change again so much that people won’t “get” Serial Vlogger.  This is why I’ve decided to write it for free on Substack. It’s timely and I don’t want to wait a couple of years for it to get published.

The slices are presented for free on Sundays on Substack.

There are weeks that I miss for whatever reasons, so I make up for the absence by adding extra installments during the week to catch up when I get them prepared. For instance, there’s a slice today (December 8), tomorrow, and then we’ll be back on track by Sunday’s slice. I don't expect to miss any more weeks for a couple of months. I'm planning to preload them over the next few days.

The slices are smaller than chapters which is why I call them slices. Several slices will make a chapter. I likely won't do the chapter indicators until the book is finished and then goes through some revisions.

Serial Vlogger is my gift to you! I appreciate all my readers over the years. While Serial Vlogger is being serialized on Substack, it is free. Once it’s finished, we’ll see what comes next.

What is the Content?

You can expect a Sèphera Girón work, uncensored. Readers of my work know that they can expect social commentary, murder, ghosts, body horror, insanity, and more. Serial Vlogger will touch on ideas such as cults, serial killers, feeders, and obsession.

This is a FICTIONAL work of horror and I’m not known for playing nice or making my reader comfortable. Consider this your trigger warning or disclaimer!

Now that we’re getting up to the teens in the slice count, I expect more people will be inclined to read as they can read more of the work all at once. Some readers like their stories doled out in bits, and some like to binge. I get it!

Patrons on Patreon

All paid levels of Patrons on my Patreon get to see the work first. In fact, they've already seen a super rough version of a big chunk of what will be published over the next few months. But they also get the little slices at least one day (when possible) before it's published on Substack.

It's FREE!

I hope you enjoy this free novel. Please subscribe for free or you can join the paid subscriber tier as a tip if you're enjoying my content.

Please share Serial Vlogger as I’m writing it for all horror fans!

A Different Time for Others

A Different Time for Others

Sèphera Girón

For those who don’t know, I’m still grieving for my dad, who died suddenly and unexpectedly in December. My mind is hyper-focused on him, my mom, who has late-stage Alzheimer’s, and the depressing insurmountable and time-consuming tasks that these life events bring. So, my thoughts may be jumbled, and I apologize.

However, it’s Women in Horror month, and the shit has hit the fan in the horror community (again). I’ve been following the latest scandal a bit and listened to the podcast where Brian Keene, Mary SanGiovanni, and Christopher Golden addressed the scandal and offered thoughts around it, their journeys through the horror field these past few decades, and shared distressed, conflicting emotions.

I’m from same era as they are, around the same age, maybe a few years older; we all began our careers around the same time, admired the same authors, and have had our mighty ups and downs; both in our personal lives and professional ones.

One thing about being around as long as we have is that we’ve seen A LOT. Both in society as a whole and in the horror community. The past few years are proving to be smackdown years as the genre evolves and grows.

Times have changed dramatically. And I don’t mean just going from writing on typewriters to home computers to cell phones.

The younger generations roll their eyes when us elders say, “It was a different time.” They need to understand it’s not an excuse; it’s a true fact.

I was a teen in the seventies in London, Ontario, Canada, not knowing at the time that I was one of the first generations to experience women’s lib, the pill, abortion rights, the sexual revolution, striving for equality in the workplace, saw Star Wars when it was Star Wars, and I experienced a whole world BEFORE Star Wars ever existed!

As I’m of a certain age, I can say without question that I’ve been sexually harassed (as it’s termed these days) at nearly every job I’ve ever had, either by customers or bosses. I’m from the days when if a manager in a bar was mad at the staff, they would wing trays around, smash shit, and scream. Bosses screamed at staff while actively working in the restaurant or store or office or theatre or or or. Teachers gave the strap, threw chalk and erasers, and slapped.

“Others” were mocked, the scapegoats. Arstsy fartsies, effeminate people, nerds, clowns, and so on.

You were either the bully/boss/gatekeeper, or you weren’t. You learned young how to duck and cover, how to be invisible, how to flirt to get ahead or to deflect harassment. You learned to blend in, whether it was being part of the mocking crowd or shrinking away. You learned how to handshake to be manly, to fit in, to be thought of more than “others.” Movies and TV shows reinforced all the ideas.

Even if you had something to say, (and some did have something to say over the years), a seeming voice of reason, the majority mocked or ignored, especially if you were “others.”

So, you blend in, playing chameleon. As most did. There might be whispers about the mighty gatekeepers, for in those days, there were always gatekeepers. Many gatekeepers were also “others,” but many were not. There was no internet. No way to know who shared your thoughts or experiences. Was it cultural? You knew the Emperor Had No Clothes, but you’re trained to blend in, don’t make waves, or all the gates slam shut.

And in those days, there were not a lot of gates if you had specific goals. Especially in the arts. Especially in the horror community.

The gatekeepers, if we’re now focusing on the horror community, weren’t necessarily editors and publishers themselves. Still, the gatekeepers rubbed elbows with all those who had various powers to find the keys that opened the gates to the kingdom.

People from around the world have different world views, and so kingdoms and gatekeepers and the gatekeepers’ gatekeepers are different as well. In Canada, the general stereotypical regard, especially back in the eighties, was that Americans are brash and rude. They push the envelope; they say stuff out loud that most would never say.  They bark loudly but are usually harmless, and most mean well. So, I watched, giving a wide berth for “other cultures” in case I wasn’t “getting it”.

Being a bit cowed when I was younger, before the travails of life made me snarky and outspoken (as happens with crones), I saw many words and actions that I considered to be anything from demeaning to shocking to cruel and rude. I stood by not doing what I should, not fighting the fight and sometimes even piling on. I, too, have been the asshole. Absolutely.

In many areas of my life, I’ve been quiet when I should have stood up for myself or someone else. We’re the product of our choices and the good thing about life is that you can make new choices if the old ones don’t serve you. We have the ability to transform our thoughts and behaviour. We can learn how to “judge” in more gentle, sympathetic and empathetic ways.

There is something to be said for “gaslighting” and “grooming” (these aren’t just buzzwords as people escaping cults can tell you), whether related to personal relationships, professional relationships, politics, or society. It’s around us in all media and entertainments. It’s only over the past few years that I’ve come to understand that what is now considered “gaslighting” and “grooming” was pretty much everyday life for most of us back in the day.

And maybe that’s why “the kids these days” don’t understand “why didn’t you speak up against this or that?” or “why didn’t you report it?”

The younger generations may not realize that things like human resources departments only really came about in the nineties and beyond. Even into the 2000s, there were no real rights at jobs, at being human. There was no manager to talk to at all about anything. You just had to shut up and suck it up. If you complained about something you heard/saw to the wrong person, it could get out, and you’d never enter the kingdom. There was no one in charge, and self-policing groups for behaviours that weren’t outright assault or stalking weren’t really a thing yet.

There are masks. There are different personas for different people. Not everyone sees a person’s every side. We all have different sides, I would think. Especially if, over the years, we’re on various medications, drugs, alcohol, are in a cult, abusive relationship, someone died, and so on. Some people change over the years. Some for the worst. Some don’t change at all.

If there were words or actions that felt wrong, who did you tell back then?

With no internet or mass communication, there was no way to know that others felt it too.

But now we do have mass communication. Sometimes, too much.

I truly admire the newer generations pointing at infractions of humanity, grievous infractions that many had slipped past, denied, ignored, placated, or shrugged off.

The horror genre has evolved into sprawling octopus tentacles where there are no more true gatekeepers. Not like back in the day. Publishing opportunities are nearly endless. You don’t have to deal with agents if you don’t want to, unlike back in the day. You can pop an editor an email or check out their social media; no more waiting for the key to the kingdom. There are many kingdoms these days.  Everyone is welcome if you show talent.

Many elders like Brian, Mary, Chris and myself are listening and learning. We’re learning that being silent did no one any good. We now have our eyes open that allies fighting for what’s just common decency are in full view and in great numbers. We don’t have to make nice anymore. We can call it as we see it, and people will back us up.

This has been a great awakening for me these past few years. I’m hoping to find my own strength to call out that which isn’t right. And I sincerely apologize to those I let down or didn’t protect. I’m working harder all the time to be better. A few years ago, I began making a YouTube theme of “Writers Behaving Badly” in an attempt to uncover some of these things but then stopped when the depression of lockdown and such kicked in.

My dad was an immigrant, part of a boatload of children from Spain sent to the States as “orphans” to start a new life. His life was a series of horrors; racism, religious abuse, physical abuse and more for being “others”. Yet, for my whole life, he judged people by deeds and character and devoured history about all cultures, races, genders and sexuality, always trying to understand why humans are so horrible to each other. He shunned all organized religions, believed they were invented to control others, and that you don’t need a religion to be a decent person. He was a humanist.

I miss my dad.

But I know, parents die, and I was lucky to have him in my life for sixty years. I credit him and my mom for making me more focused on character and deeds and to be curious about how we historically got here from all cultural, religious, and racial aspects. My whole immediate family is prone to giving people “the benefit of the doubt,” and I’m learning as I age that there’s no law that says we have to do that. That was from the “don’t make waves” generations. We don’t have to be that anymore. I’ve felt distressed for decades about some things I’ve seen and heard in many areas of my life, and regret rarely doing much about but, usually, because I didn’t know what to do.

The younger generations are giving me the strength to see that something CAN be done about a lot of things.

This is eye-opening for so many of us. Sometimes evolution and revolution are good things.

To a very few, I’d like to suggest that instead of shaming and blaming and JUDGING us with “how could you not know?” or “why didn’t you report it?” why not be patient and teach us how to be better at fighting it? One day, you too will be of “a different time.”

These days on social media, there are witch hunts for the witch hunts and I’m not sure that’s any better than the original issue. Digging into people’s privacy (spying on who is “friends” with someone, for instance) and dictating your personal beliefs on how things should be handled (unfriend or else…!) is just as bad as being the misogynist, racist, homophobic asshole you’re complaining about, in my opinion. So to those few, I suggest you focus on getting your own life straight and do your part to fight the fight, which doesn’t include shaming and blaming other people for their own choices in how they handle a controversy if they even know about it. Not everyone spends their time online sucking up your drama.

However, in the spirit of Women in Horror Month, I say, ladies, let’s keep fighting against the misogyny. As those old Virginia Slim cigarette commercials used to say, “We’ve come a long way, baby!” And as we now know, cigarettes will kill you, and so will our old ideas. So, butt out that cigarette, and let’s all move forward to new days ahead.

Virgina Slims Ad
See how much we've learned since this ad ran in the sixties?!?!

And to everyone and especially to those who feel like they’re on the outside looking in, “others,” let’s keep fighting and learning and growing together. There is room for every human being at the table in every house in every kingdom. Claim your spot!

Happy Women in Horror Month!

If you strategize, you can read these books for free on your phone, both Android and iPhone!
Please give them "likes" or whatever it is so they can get up in the searches.

Let Us Burn
is finished and up.
This was a team project and a lot of fun to write.

Four Witches and a Dude is a work in progress. Chapter Three should be posted soon.
I'm doing this one completely by myself so it will take longer even though the book itself is finished in a rough first draft. It's a learning curve adding pictures and sound effects but I'm enjoying the process!

Writing Sessions with Sephera666

My TwitchTV/sephera666 Schedule for this Week

      Tuesday, March 8, 2022      4 p.m. EST    Writing Sprint

      Thursday, March 10, 2022   4 p.m. EST    Writing Sprint

      Friday, March 11, 2022        2 p.m. EST     Gaming

Sunday, March 13, 2022       3 p.m. EST     Horror Writers Association Round Table

Writing Sprints and Gaming should be pretty much the same every week.

Check my schedule on Twitch in case I have to move times around now and again.

The Round Table is a special event with the Horror Writers Association!

    Writing Sprints

Currently, the format I have for Writing Sprint sessions goes like this:

Saying hello, talking a little bit about almost anything and answering the chat until we're ready to go, maybe five to ten minutes, depending on questions.

The timer is set for thirty minutes. I turn off my mic and everyone writes for thirty minutes.

There is a five to ten-minute break to go to the bathroom, get drinks and snacks, or go through stretching exercises with me. We can also talk about what we're working on, word counts for the session, goals, or if you have any questions about publishing/writing, we can discuss that as well.

The timer is set again for another thirty minutes.

The number of cycles depends on how long I can stay on and interest from the chat. My goal is an end time of seven p.m. EST but I often have to leave a bit early for work meetings that begin at seven.

I've been doing writing sprints for a few weeks now and am finding that I'm more productive than I thought I'd be. If you've never sprinted, give it a try.

Going forward, I'm considering having some kind of writing challenges where there would be prizes and such, but first, we have to build a good community.

Writers can be of any age, any level, and you can be working in any genre. You are only accountable to yourself. You can share or not, it's up to you.

I don't keep my counter on nor do I have the thing where I can see who is coming by. That way I'm not distracted by numbers and people. However, if you talk in the chat, I'll see you! If you chat to me during a sprint, I'll usually wait until the sprint is over to reply on the mic so as not to disrupt other sprinters.

I play royalty-free music from Pretzel that I hope is good background music for writing in any genre.

     Gaming Day

This is the day when I relax and play a game. I'm a really new gamer so I'm still learning and you can help me out!

       Special Events

Every now and again, there will be and have been special events on my Twitch.TV channel.

Sunday, March 13, 2022   3 p.m.  Women in Horror Month Roundtable with Authors from The Horror Writers Association

This special event is a one-and-a-half-hour panel of a discussion about horror. There will be a moderator who asks questions and you'll have an opportunity to ask questions in the chat. I'm one of the authors on the round table, the others are still being finalized. The moderator is David Thirteen.

     Monday, May 2, 2022        7 p.m.  Sèphera reads horror.

I'll be reading for about half an hour from one of my published horror novels. This event is sponsored by the National Reading Program through The Writers Union of Canada funded by the Canada Council for the Arts.

     Tuesday, June 21, 2022       7 p.m.  Sèphera reads horror.

Online Horror Reading at Galactic Terrors on December 9 at 8 pm EST!

On Thursday, December 9th, at 8 pm, I'll be reading one of my stories at the Galactic Terrors reading series. Tim Waggoner and Lisa Mannetti are also reading.

Yes, Lisa died on August 19, 2021, but they'll be playing a recording of her reading. I think it's a wonderful tribute to her and she'd be thrilled to be remembered in such a way.

Tim and I go way back together. We both published with Leisure Books and Samhain Horror back in the day! He currently publishes with Flame Tree among other publishers and also is known for tie-ins such as Halloween Kills and Alien: Prototype. We'd see each other all the time at various conventions over the years. It'll be fun to virtually read with him! Maybe our paths will cross sooner than later in real life again if this pandemic ever ends!

This is a free online event. Go click the link right now to set the reminder!

'Tis the season to be creepy...

Trying New Things!

One of the many new things I've been trying lately is getting on board the app train!

I have two books up on SCREAM: THRILLS AND CHILLS right this very minute.

SCREAM is a new production from Crazy Maple Studios.

Download the SCREAM: THRILLS AND CHILLS app from Google Play or Apple.

To celebrate this Beta launch, I'll be doing a contest for YOU to win coins so watch my social media for details over the next few days!

In other news:

Over the past year, I've been writing a couple of TV pilots and feature films in hope that perhaps one day they'll be made. You can find them over at Coverfly and Stage32.

I've also sent some pitches around to other apps in hope that I can write an interactive book or game.

So anything can happen!

In the meantime, mark your calendars, as I'll be doing another live reading on Twitch Tv.

Monday June 21 at 7 p.m. on http://www.twitch.tv/sephera666

It's Alive! Flesh Failure Lives!

Flesh Failure is another study in my exploration of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus.

Flesh Failure is set in 1888 London, the year of the Ripper, along with many other interesting historical pinnings that shape events in this story.

Our heroine claws her way through a maze of lies, attempting to discover who she really is.

She doesn't have much time, as someone such as herself isn't built for this world.

Flesh Failure was originally published by Samhain Horror Publishing as an eBook and was packaged with Captured Souls as a duo in a print version called Experiments in Terror.

Both Flesh Failure and Captured Souls are currently published by Scarlett Publishing. And both riff on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

Flesh Failure is available right now in eBook on Amazon. It will be out in print soon. It will likely be available with other distributors in a week or two.

Writers Behaving Badly Video: Share Her Journey Rally, Horror Writers, Allergies and Kylo Ren

I made a video about the latest scuttlebutt in the Horror field.

I had just come from the Share Her Journey Rally so was feeling a bit pumped up!

I also talk a bit about how my stupid allergies are ruining my life, or at least embarrassing me everywhere I go!

I know a couple of Kylo Rens probably thought I was crying for them. I get excited to see Kylo Rens, especially ones that really look like Kylo Ren without the mask, but I don't cry! ha! I'm an Aquarius, it takes a lot to make my cold, dark little heart cry!

I know the cute dude at the Koodo booth thought I was crazy with my crying eyes.

My fellow rally participants at Share Her Journey likely thought I was so moved I was crying at all the speakers!

I also keep waking up with a giant pig face and then my eyes are red and leaky all day and it's so frigging embarrassing. I've not looked like me in a couple of weeks.

I've now switched over to Benadryl which seems to work better than Claritin but I keep passing out on my keyboard so how is that good?

Onward and upward!

In the meantime, enjoy the video!

Is Self-Publishing Still Lucrative?

Many authors wrestle with the choice between publishing traditionally or to self-publish.

Observing this struggle often amuses me because it was only a few years ago that being self-published was not something that one admitted to doing or being involved with in any form. Authors who self-published were considered egomaniacs and anyone involved with the process of helping an author self-publish was a crook taking advantage of a misguided fool. The word “self-published” was whispered in low voices in hallways and at parties. People who worked in the self-published world moved through the rest of the publishing industry as ghosts who dared not say, "boo" in order not to be revealed.

Now, almost everyone is a writer and everyone wants to self-publish. With new technology, anyone can publish a book and enjoy free distribution for very little cost. Of course, there are those who realize self-publishing is a business like any other and invest thousands accordingly into editors, cover artists, a publicist, ads, entry fees to awards, and so on.  Any self-publishing route can be paved with success or  fraught with failure or something in-between.

Just Tell Me the Secret, Dammit!
Now, of course, human nature and all, everyone wants the new secret of success, the keys to the golden kingdom of fat bank accounts and working in pajamas.

There will always be those who learn how to crack the nut first and get the best meat.

Then there are those late to the party who get the rotting inner shell of what was once a golden opportunity.

If you're just dragging yourself out of hibernation and learning how to embrace that new-fangled technology that all the kids have, well, you may have missed the nut.

Does Self-Publishing Currently Offer the Same Opportunities?
Is the self-publishing trend slowing down? Is the market glutted? Is it going to crash? Can even “the mighty few” still earn a living just self-publishing?

I personally have edited self-published authors for over a decade. I’ve only come “out of the closet” as it were, about it all, a couple of years ago. Now I advertise my services for helping self-published authors achieve success. My how the worm turns. There are now armies of editorial services geared for self-published authors when before, there were hardly any, and those of us who did it kept it pretty quiet.

Buyer Beware!
Of course, like being an author, anyone can declare him or herself an editor and voila! They can go out into the world and do what they want. Most editors are fantastic and rates vary widely. In my own case, some people tell me I’m too expensive while others say I don’t charge enough. However, some editors charge very little and I wonder if they have other sources of income because if they put the time required into editing that they should, they couldn’t exist on a dollar an hour or whatever. Some really should charge way more. Others shouldn’t be allowed near other peoples’ words.

Editors Aren't Magicians!
An editor can only work with what is on the page. We can’t rewrite your work for you, nor should we. There are people who will write your work for you, they are called ghostwriters, and they do a great job as well. A work will stand on its own as it is. An editor can sometimes make a huge difference, but usually, it’s like going into a house. You can tell that the facade is all nice and pretty but underneath there is rot and decay.

An editor can’t help find talent or make a story make sense if it truly doesn’t make sense. However, an editor can do the best he or she can to make it all better. No matter how harsh you think your editor might be, he or she just wants you to look your best. Sometimes it hurts to disembowel your baby, but often, it's not a baby at all, but a big puss filled cyst. A good editor knows what the current market wants and how to make your book fit. It's often painful but you're paying for professional advice, listen to it.

Be Honest with Yourself
It is up to you, the author, to decide if your book is ready for the world. A traditional publishing house’s editor’s opinion can be a good benchmark. Even a rejection can often show that the book is good if the return note says something like there are not enough slots for everyone. That’s a good sign you can self-publish. However, if you get suggestions for writing classes, then maybe some revisions are in order before self-publishing. Don’t go on the praise from friends or mom who are surprised that you finished anything at all and likely don’t know for sure if it’s any good or has grammar issues.

Self-Publishing Is a Valuable Tool
Self-publishing is a great boon for authors such as myself who have had stories published in small press, obscure magazines, or just plain long time ago. We can pull out those old stories and release them one at a time or in a collection. My Weird Tales of Terror collection is the example of what a great tool self-publishing can be for an author with a backlist.

In that collection, there are a couple of stories that were previously published. There are stories that were accepted for anthologies but then the anthology died for whatever reason. There is a complete novel that never fit a slot for horror, fantasy, or occult so it was unmarketable. Self-publishing allows that book to be born when in could have died in a box like some of my other books that are lost forever, and thank goodness for all of that!

Self-publishing has given me a great tool to release these stories. They already had professional stamps of approval which I personally need for my own self-validation issues so I felt confident trying to make them look presentable as I taught myself how to self-publish. The book is chugging along. I often buy a dozen paperbacks and sell them when I’m at local conventions and libraries.
However, if I were a brand new author attempting to self-publish without any previous traditional track record, it would be even harder than it is to build recognition and create a brand.

There Are No Short Cuts to a Writing Career
Self-publishing is a lot of work but so is traditional publishing. If you self-publish, you can save thousands of dollars a year by not having to go to writers conventions to meet editors and publishers. You sell to yourself so you don’t need to schmooze. You never have to face rejection or the hacking sword of an editor.

Of course, if you have the money, you can hire a cover designer and a couple of editors.

Follow the Hybrid Road
I personally think being a hybrid author is the way to go. There are many pros and cons for each manner of publishing. I’m in the position that I’m playing in both sandboxes.

Of course, I really just want a six-figure advance for a contract to write a trilogy! Haha

Anyway, I’ll be at the North York Public Library on Saturday October 8 for the Indie Author Day.

I’m on a panel from 1 - 2 p.m. about self-publishing and then I’ll be at a table selling copies of Weird Tales of Terror and signing any book you might bring in until around 4. So come to the library and meet about fifteen authors and learn the secrets about the self-publishing industry and its rapid growth. Is it still the best way to control a career?

Get Advice from Working Pros
The landscape has changed dramatically over the past five years. Learn all the new tips and trick from the pros working in the trenches right now at the panels and workshops. Everyone at the tables will have a story to share and wisdom on how best to navigate in the tricky mazes of the self-publishing world.

At any rate, there’s an Indie Author Market on Saturday, October 8, 2016 where you can listen to a few panels and talk to real live authors who can offer you some free advice.

Later on in the month, you can find me at the Albert Campbell Library on Wednesday, October 19.

I'm at a Horror Festival at Chapters in Guelph on October 22.

If you come by, say hello and pick up a copy of Weird Tales of Terror or bring something you already have from home for me to sign!
